Overland journey by ox team from St. Joseph, Missouri, to California /by Benjamin Franklin Dowell, 1850.

In 1850, Dowell sent his journal to a friend in Sacramento City. It describes the trip west from St. Joseph to California by way of the Little Blue, Big Blue, and Platte rivers, Fort Laramie, Sublette's Cut-off, Fort Hall, the Humboldt and Truckee rivers. He notes daily mileage, deaths, and the availability of grazing, game and water.

Dowell moved to Portland, Oregon in 1850, and then to Jackson in 1852, finally moving back to Portland in 1855. He took part in the Rogue River Indian War in 1853 and the Yakima War in 1855. He operated a pack train from Wilamette Valley to the gold mines and bought and edited the Oregon Sentinel.
